Proxmox VE

A robust virtualization platform, without OpenStack's entry ticket

For infrastructures in the tens to a couple hundred VMs, Proxmox VE delivers HA, live migration and snapshots without the operational overhead of a full OpenStack cloud. We deploy the cluster, migrate your VMware workloads and set up Ceph or another storage backend sized for your scale.

Deployment path
VMware → Proxmox
  1. 1
    Audit and sizing
VM count, HA and DR requirements, network constraints and target storage backend.
  2. 2
    HA cluster and storage
Corosync quorum sized correctly, hyperconverged Ceph or ZFS depending on your scale.
  3. 3
    Pilot group
Validates the import path, VirtIO drivers and rollback before critical workloads move.
  4. 4
    Migration waves and backup
ESXi import or scripted virt-v2v per wave, Proxmox Backup Server in place before cutover.

Approach

Is Proxmox the right fit for your infrastructure?

We size the platform to the infrastructure, not the other way around. Proxmox and OpenStack solve the same exit-from-VMware problem at two different scales.

Proxmox VE fits when

  • The fleet is roughly under 200-300 VMs, with no dedicated platform team to operate a full cloud stack.
  • HA, live migration and snapshots cover the need, without multi-tenant self-service.
  • The entry ticket and ongoing operational cost must stay proportionate to the fleet size.

OpenStack remains the right target when

  • The fleet exceeds that range today, or growth is planned toward it.
  • Teams need isolated projects, quotas and self-service, or native security groups and network micro-segmentation.
  • Automation at scale relies on a full API-driven cloud ecosystem.

HA cluster and storage

Quorum-safe Corosync configuration, one OSD per disk with no hardware RAID when the cluster is hyperconverged Ceph, or a ZFS-based alternative for smaller footprints. Pools, PG counts and replica sizes are sized against your actual capacity and failure domains.

VMware to Proxmox migration

Native ESXi import for a fast pilot, or scripted virt-v2v and qemu-img for bulk waves and air-gapped environments. VirtIO drivers, UEFI firmware and the guest agent are handled during conversion, not discovered after a failed boot.

Backup and continuity

Proxmox Backup Server with incremental backups after the first full copy, a retention policy matched to your RPO, and restore tests documented before go-live, not assumed.

What Proxmox does not do natively

Proxmox has no notion of project or tenant, and no native security groups or network micro-segmentation between VMs: any guest on a bridge can reach any other guest on it. We compensate with fine-grained pool and permission scoping on the Proxmox side, and an explicit VLAN and firewall design on the network side. If strict per-project network isolation is a hard requirement, that points back to OpenStack.

01

Audit and sizing

We map the VMware fleet, storage, network and HA requirements before proposing a cluster size and storage backend.

02

Cluster deployment

We build the HA cluster and storage backend, then validate the migration path on a pilot group before touching production workloads.

03

Migration and cutover

We migrate VMs by wave, validate backups and HA, and stabilize production before the source VMware environment is decommissioned.

What your team receives

A VMware fleet inventory, a documented and tested HA cluster, per-wave migration procedures, a Proxmox Backup Server policy with tested restores, updated architecture documentation and hands-on training for your team on day-to-day Proxmox administration.
